History of Pinehurst; Founder James Tufts
In 1895, James Walker Tufts drove a stake into the sandy soil somewhere in the middle of 5,500 acres of pine barrens. This location was to become what is now known as Pinehurst. At the time, no one could foresee the future of this timber cut land.
James Tufts, a philanthropist, well known as a shrewd businessman, felt there was a market for an affordable spot for working people from the north to escape the cold winter weather. He wanted a town designed on the looks of a New England Village. An old friend of the Tufts, Fredrick Law Olmstead, was his choice of designers. Olmstead was the designer of New York City's Central Park.
From June to December 1895, village streets were graded, electricity and telephone systems were installed, 226,000 trees and shrubs were planted, are under the watchful eye of Olmstead, Pinehurst's first hotel, The Holly Inn, opened for visitors. It had only been seven months since Tufts first drove the stake and named the spot Pinehurst.
In the fall of 1897, a guest brought a set of golf clubs to Pinehurst. There were stories right away about guest invading the cow pasture and scaring the cows by chasing little white balls around. Realizing that there was a need to strengthen the village recreational activities culminated in the opening of the county's first golf course, Pinehurst No. 1, in 1898.
This new game of golf grew in popularity, positioning Pinehurst right on the cutting edge. In 1900, Tufts hired a golf professional named Donald Ross for the new golf facility. In response to the golf craze, Donald Ross began his career in golf course design. By 1910, Ross was designing golf courses not only for Pinehurst but also all over the country.

History of Southern Pines Real Estate
Southern Pines NC was founded around 1820 as a stopover point on the only north and south railroad on the eastern seaboard. Over the years this charming mid-south town evolved into a resort community with horses and golf as the main attractions.
Today, Southern Pines, with just over 13,000 residents, offers a unique and appealing combination of resort, retirement and contemporary residential real estate. Its eclectic neighborhoods surround a quaint and inviting business/shopping village with tree lined streets, restaurants to satisfy any appetite, art galleries and shops that offer a full range of clothing and gift items.
In addition, the local Sunrise Theatre host musical, theatrical and cinema events. The old movie theatre has been transformed into a community arts center that offers national acts, foreign films and community plays.
North Carolina's first commissioner of immigration, James T. Patrick, was responsible for bring newcomers to the state. He thought that southern Moore County had great potential for development. Most of the local men were involved in the timber and lumber business. Patrick met someone that came to this area with tuberculosis because of the healthy climate, so he ventured out and bought 675 acres of land for $1,265. This was just $2 an acre. This parcel of land became Southern Pines.
Southern Pines was built with the railroad going right down the middle of town. This was done so that visitors could disembark at the station and find lodging within a couple of blocks. Patrick was advertising the municipality of Southern Pines as a health resort. Patrick lived long enough to see the town of Southern Pines become a very successful and thriving community. Patrick purchased the land in 1884 and by 1887 the town of Southern Pines had grown into a healthy village of fifty families.
Of the many residents that contributed to the growth and development of Southern Pines, the most outstanding members, were from the Boyd family. In 1903, James Boyd, a coal merchant from Pennsylvania, bought 2,000 acres of land on the northeast side of Southern Pines. Boyd built an estate that he named Weymouth Heights and developed 500 acres into lots for future homes. Helen Boyd
Dull, Boyd's widowed daughter, was instrumental in starting civic organizations and beautification projects in Southern Pines. This included lining the railroad tracts with magnolias on Broad Street.
Boyd's grandson, James, returned after World War I and began writing, leaving a literary mark on Southern Pines. James Boyd, the third generation of Boyd's, wrote poetry and historical novels, earning a place in American literature. James wrote two best sellers in the 1920's. The historic novels were 'Drums' and 'Marching On'. He later became publisher of the local paper, The Pilot. The Boyd's influences on the Moore Country Hounds are still evident today. With over 4,000 acres to ride on, Southern Pines offers the Walthour-Moss Foundation...every equestrians dream!
Because Southern Pines combines the north, south, old and new, it is especially appealing to the people who live and visit. Whispering Pines
The name Whispering Pines aptly describes the serenity and natural beauty of this highly desirable community. The quality of life in Whispering Pines is greatly enhanced by the design of the community itself. There are 54 golf fairways and miles of shoreline on six crystal lakes. The residents consist of over 1000 custom designed homes, most of which are lakefront or golf course properties.
With a total population of just over 2,000, Whispering Pines is characterized by quiet, tree lined streets and minimal commercial development coupled with close proximity to both Pinehurst and Southern Pines. Both towns are within a ten minute drive, offering excellent restaurants, modern shopping plazas, and small quaint specialty shops.

Offices and clinics of a variety of board-certified medical specialists are part of the broad spectrum of medical care within the Moore Regional area.
The village continues to be a community for both retirees and younger families. Parents are particularly attracted by the quality of the Farm Life School System. This ideal community is surrounded by rural land, and yet easily accessible to fine shopping and fine restaurants.

History of Whispering Pines
The history of Thagards Lake in Whispering Pines goes back to the colonial days. Many Moore County towns can trace their history to land grants, including Whispering Pines. Charles Hurd received a land grant from the king of England for 100 acres, in 1759, on the south side of the lake. And ten years later, Nicholas Smith had a grant for 50 acres of land on the north side of the lake. Smith built a dam and mill on the lake that was located on his property. The lake was the distinctive part of this parcel of land. John Ray eventually bought the land on the north and south side of the lake. In 1865 William C. Thagard bought the lake and the surrounding property.
A. B. Hardee bought the lake and more then 400 surrounding acres in 1959, knowing that water has a great appeal. As a Real Estate agent, Hardee decided he would develop this land into a private golf course and residential area. In only ten years Whispering Pines was incorporated. This made the residents very proud of their town. This charter made Whispering Pines the first municipality in the state to be officially designated as a village.
By the time development was finished, Whispering Pines covered over 2,000 acres with six lakes and sixteen miles of paved roads. Today you can enjoy the picturesque lakes or just listen to the wind whisper through the pines. There are six lakes surrounded by residences and two semi-private golf courses. Whispering Woods and Whispering Winds are part of Whispering Pines. The village continues to be a community to both the young and retirees.
Seven Lakes Real Estate
Nestled among longleaf pines lies the gated resort of Seven Lakes, just ten miles north of Pinehurst. The population of Seven Lake is +/-4,000 and has more the 2,000 homes. Seven Lakes offers a well-balanced mix of empty nest retirees and active families.

Aberdeen NC, a town of 4,100, is recognized as the commercial
center of Moore County. It offers a modern business section along a two-mile stretch of US Highway 1, with a full range of retail and commercial services.

History of Aberdeen
In 1739, the first Scottish colonist came to America and settled in the Cape Fear Region. The Highland Scots settled in Moore County for the availability of land and four major roads. With the railroads, a community called Blues Crossing grew steadily and eventually became Aberdeen .
Real estate is always a valued commodity in Aberdeen and in 1880 Alison Francis Page bought 1,600 acres of timber and
began his business. Page and his business efforts were a success from the start. Blues Crossing changed from a mere stopping point on the railroad to an important commercial center. In October 1887, Blues Crossing adopted the name Aberdeen in honor of the Highland Scot that had originally settled the area.
Today Aberdeen's population is about 10,800. Their historic district has been refurbished and preserved by the town's citizens. On July 2, 1989, the Aberdeen Historic District was dedicated, and encompasses 88 acres and over 100 historic buildings that were constructed in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Take a drive down tree-lined streets, where homes built earlier in the century remain unchanged. Enjoy Aberdeen's antique shops in the old hardware building downtown.

History of Carthage Real Estate
Activities in Carthage have revolved around the courthouse through the years, and still do today. By dividing Cumberland County, Moore County was created and on July 4 1784, the North Carolina legislature officially recognized Moore County. Because there were no incorporated towns in the new county there wasn't a county seat and no spot to hold court. The legislature appointed a committee to come up with a site for a new county seat.
The site was in the center of the new county, and the name Carthage was chosen. The town itself was not laid out until 1803. Carthage did not officially become the county seat until 1804.
In 1814, the courthouse was moved to the location of the historic courthouse. This location is at the intersection of the main avenues of Carthage. The courthouse sits at the highest elevation of the county, an altitude of almost 900 feet. The 1814 courthouse has been replaced six times, due to a floor collapse and several fires. The historic fifth courthouse and government building was erected across the street. Today both the fifth and sixth courthouse are used as government offices and court facilities.
From the 1850's to the 1920's, Carthage's growth was due to its successful buggy industry. This major industry remained the largest factory in Moore County into the 20th century. The factory's peak was in 1890 turning out approximately 3000 vehicles a year. The horse drawn buggy brought prosperity to Carthage, but the automobile spelled doom for the buggy company. The Buggy Festival of Carthage is an annual event honoring the town's heritage of carriage makers. Carthage is very proud that it has over 50 building and residences of historic significance, within the National Historic District.
With a population of about 14,600, Carthage is seen as one of the faster growing towns in the county. Carthage has a long and rich heritage in the history of Moore County since the colonial days. It is an ideal community in which to consider real estate.
