PUTTING TIPS with Donna Andrews
KEEP IT SIMPLE FOR BETTER DISTANCE CONTROL
When you putt let your arms swing like a pendulum. Create a triangle with your two arms and the top of your shoulders. The pendulum stroke is this triangle moving back and forth . To better control your distance make sure you r stroke is the same distance back and forward (through). Also make sure the pace and speed of the stroke is the same back and through.
One reason you may have trouble controlling your distance is when the triangle breaks down or collapses by bending your arms or wrist. (See picture below left) Make a few strokes feeling the left wrist and arm staying in the same position throughout your stroke. You may be able to feel this better by hitting a few balls with the left hand below the right on your grip. (See picture below right) This will allow the left arm to hang more freely and the wrist to be in a straighter position at address.

STAY STILL FOR BETTER PUTTING RESULTS
(reprinted with permission from Golf for Women Magazine, Nov-Dec 2004)
Putting is the part of the game where consistency matters most. If you can keep you body still while swinging only your arms and shoulders you'll see your putts (and your score) drop.
I. (for shorter putts) Keep your body still and take a solid grip. (I use the left hand low grip cause it lets move the putter on a more stright back/straight through path.) The key to good putting technique is to make sure the stroke is the same length going back as it is going through.
II. (for longer putts) Use the same technique. Take a longer backswing and a longer follow through. Key is to maintain the same pace throughout the entire stroke. I use a metronome to get the feeling of the correct "tic toc" rythm.

Putting Drill; Close Your Eyes
Many players follow the ball with their eyes to see if the ball goes in --after they've hit. But turning your head moves your uper body through the stroke causing you to pull the ball to the left. To practice keeping your head and eyes still, putt some four footers with a blindfold on (or if you trust yourself - just close your eyes). Don't look up until you hear the ball go in the cup. |
